Volin: End Of Tom Brady Could Be Sooner Than Expected

BOSTON (CBS) - So far, the 2014 season has not been kind to the New England Patriots.

Through four games fans have come to the realization that quarterback Tom Brady, at his age, has not been surrounded with the type of talent needed to win a Super Bowl. In the prime of his career, Brady was able to make up for some of the inadequacies of the offense, and now at 37 years old he's been put into a situation that's probably not fair for him.

That's not to say he hasn't struggled. At 2-2 with an offense ranked near the bottom in most categories, Brady is not without blame.

To discuss the struggles of Brady and the Patriots, 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich welcomed in Ben Volin of the Boston Globe for a Wednesday morning discussion.

"Monday night was a stark reminder to Patriots fans that this run is not going to last forever," said Volin. "Tom Brady is 37 years old. People are making a lot of excuses for the offense right now. 'They don't have enough weapons, the offensive line stinks, the coaching stinks' -- I agree with all that, but I think we also have to look at no. 12."

Physically the tools are still there, but Volin argues that mentally Brady is a mess.

"He just hasn't been playing well right now. I think he's just completely out of his mind, going crazy over this offensive line. He's panicking in the pocket when he needs to get rid of the football. He's just all out of sorts and kind of a mental headcase right now. It's just a mess."

Volin then points to examples throughout football's history, and predicts a similar outcome could be on the horizon for TB12.

"Joe Montana got traded. Peyton Manning got cut. Johnny Unitas, Brett Favre and other legendary quarterbacks didn't end their careers with one team. I think considering where Brady is in his career, his contract and what they have in [Jimmy] Garoppolo, I think the end is gonna come a lot sooner than we expect."
