Vitor Belfort Will Fight for Middleweight Title
Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort, will get a shot at the UFC's Middleweight belt after all. "The Phenom" was originally scheduled to fight current champ Anderson Silva back in April at UFC 112, but he was forced to pull out due to a shoulder injury which later required surgery. Silva went on to defeat Demain Maia to regain his belt in less than impressive fashion. But according to Belfort's manager and MMAJunkie.com, the next time Vitor enters the octagon it will be for the 185 lb title.
Anderson Silva is set to face Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 in August, the winner will already know their next opponent, Belfort.
Vitor Belfort made his UFC debut back in 1997 at UFC 12 where he was the events Heavyweight Champion winning 2 fights. He then won the UFC Light Heavyweight title at UFC 46 with a TKO (cut) victory over Randy Couture, who he subsequently lost the belt to in his next fight. His TKO win over Wanderlei Silva may be the most exciting 1st round, under 1 minute, victory in MMA history.
In addition to Couture and W. Silva, Belfort holds wins over, Tank Abbott, Gilbert Yvel, Heath Herring, Marvin Eastman, Matt Lindland, and Rich Franklin in his return to the UFC at UFC 93 in Ireland back on September 19, 2009. The victory over Franklin earned Belfort knockout of the night honors and a title shot with Silva. He still gets his title shot, but now must way and see if it will be against the greatest middleweight of all time or the challenger Chael Sonnen.
The Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva/Chael Sonnen fight is expected to take place sometime this fall.
