Man Dead After Gunfight, Police Chase Through Several Towns
BROCKTON (CBS/AP) --- Shortly after noon, a man led police on a chase after an attempted armed robbery in Brockton.
During the chase, State Police say the suspect fired shots at police officers while continuing to flee in a black truck. The chase continued through several towns, including Whitman, where police say the gunman got out of his truck and started shooting at police with a shotgun.
The chase ended with a confrontation with police on Thatcher Street in East Bridgewater. The Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said a State Police detective assigned to his office fired his weapon and hit the suspect.
The suspect was taken to the hospital where he died.
The chase started when a plainclothes police officer noticed the man sitting in his truck in the parking lot of a CVS with the shotgun. The man then fled.
Cruz said an investigation of the shooting has been referred to the Cape and Island District Attorney's Office to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
The identity of the suspect was not immediately released.
