Fraternity Suspended As Police Investigate Death Of UNH Student Vincenzo Lirosi
DURHAM (CBS) – The University of New Hampshire said they're following standard protocol by temporarily suspending the Sigma Chi Fraternity as police investigate the death of a student.
The family of UNH student Vincenzo Lirosi told WBZ-TV by phone that they're devastated, but overwhelmed by the show of support by those on campus.
Hundreds of students gathered for a vigil honoring Lirosi Monday evening.
"I didn't personally know him, but he sounded really charming and funny and charismatic," said UNH freshman Kate Watt. "I think the vigil was very meaningful."
With an autopsy underway, police in Durham, NH are trying to piece together how the 22-year-old, affectionately known as "Vinny" wound up dead after leaving a frat party Saturday night.
"I think it's a big reality check for guys that it's a possibility this could happen to anyone," said junior Sydney Mulkern.
The Sigma Chi house was quiet Tuesday after the university announced they've temporarily suspended the fraternity pending the police investigation into Lirosi's death.
Some students said it's tough to blame the fraternity.
"I don't think a lot of people know the whole story. I think there are a lot of stories roaming around, but I think this whole situation is an important lesson that we need to walk home with somebody," Watts explained.
Her friend, freshman Anna Souza agreed that the tragedy is a reminder for students to look out for each other.
"Don't let anyone walk home alone because you never know what could happen," Souza said.
