Vigil Held For Teen Stabbed To Death In Dorchester
BOSTON (CBS) - It's not the after-school activity anyone wants to see on the streets of Dorchester. Candles were lit in memory of a teenager who was stabbed to death.
His friends were looking for a way to say goodbye. "He was a type of goofy and friendly person," said friend Iyana Lovings. "I don't understand why this happened, everybody liked him."
Dion Hopkins, 15, was killed Sunday when police say he got into a fight with 16-year-old Amari Pope's girlfriend and Pope, who lived nearby, grabbed a kitchen knife and allegedly stabbed him in the heart.
You couldn't see him, hiding behind a wall, but Pope was in court Monday as prosecutors laid out the evidence against him.
Dion's family is now trying to deal with the loss.
"He's a good kid," his Uncle Charles Skinner said. "I love him. He's like any other teenager."
But, for Dion's friends and family, this is not an isolated incident, but part of a much larger problem.
Taisha Jones says, "It's too much, we are losing too many of our young people, it needs to stop."
Jones not only knew Dion, but she is also a mom. She says, the violence has to stop and she is not alone.
Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans tells WBZ, "It's quite a tragedy and I hope everyone is outraged. It could be a teachable moment that we have to do a lot more to get the kids the services they need."
