Video Captures Purse Theft In Walmart Parking Lot; Teen Arrested
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (CBS) -- Surveillance video captured a brazen theft in a Walmart parking lot in New Hampshire on Friday afternoon, and a 16-year-old has been arrested in the incident.
The thief in a baseball cap and sunglasses can be seen waiting outside the entrance to the Portsmouth store when he spots an elderly woman leaving with her shopping cart.
He follows her to her car and can be seen swiping her purse from her carriage while she's loading items into her trunk.
Police say he then returned to the store and used items from her purse to make a purchase. The thief later threw the woman's purse away on the side of the road, where a passerby found it and turned it into police.
Police were able to locate the purse's owner, who told them she had been at a Walmart. That's when they turned to the surveillance cameras.
"Based on that video, someone from the public came forward and was able to identify a 16-year-old male as the person who stole the purse," Portsmouth police Sgt. Dave Keaveny said.
