Valentine: Ortiz Likely To Go Back On DL
BOSTON (CBS/AP) - Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz may be put back on the disabled list Monday.
That was the word from manager Bobby Valentine after Ortiz sat out his second straight game Sunday.
He missed 35 games with a sore right Achilles tendon before returning Friday, going 2 for 4 with a double and aggravating the injury.
He has not played since.
"It's likely that if he doesn't have a miraculous recovery tonight, we'll have a DL situation tomorrow," Valentine said, declining to say whether a move to the disabled list at this point in the year would be season-ending.
"I know David wants to be with the team and he wants to do what he's done all year, and that's to be a major contributor."
Ortiz said before the game that he is unable to concentrate on batting because he is worried about his leg.
"Instead of just seeing the ball and hitting the ball, I'm thinking about how my foot is going to react once I take off running," Ortiz told reporters.
"We're talking to the doctors and we're going to have some decision by the end of the game just to see how we're going to approach this."
