Upstairs On The Square In Cambridge Hosts Reunion Dinner Before Closing

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) - A beloved Harvard Square restaurant, Upstairs on the Square, is closing at the end of the year. Before it shuts down, its owners hosted a bittersweet reunion dinner Sunday night for all of the couples who wed at the restaurant over the years.

"We love doing weddings and our staff shows it. I think people respond to that," co-owner Mary-Catherine Deibel told WBZ-TV.

Deibel and her business partner Deborah Hughes opened their first place 31 years ago. Upstairs at the Pudding was in the old Hasty Pudding Theater building before it was renovated in 2001. Though they moved their restaurant across campus, the women never stopped hosting dinner parties.

"It's so fantastically decorated, you didn't have to worry about anything," said Julie Bowden, who married her husband Rick Grudzinski at the restaurant in 2009.

Bowden and Grudzinski were one of 60 couples who returned to Upstairs on the Square for the wedding reunion dinner Sunday. The dinner was complete with a Harvard a cappella group for entertainment, a wedding cake and wedding favors.

"It's really nice to have this kind of closure," said Bowden. "I wasn't expecting it but it's nice to be here with all these other people who got married here."
