UMass Memorial Health Care Cutting Up To 900 Jobs
BOSTON (CBS) - UMass Memorial Health Care, one of the largest health care systems in central Massachusetts, is planning to cut 700 to 900 jobs.
The system operates UMass Memorial Medical Center and four community hospitals. It has 13,500 workers. The cuts would be about six-percent of that.
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, UMass Memorial said the job cuts are necessary because of declining patient volumes and reimbursements.
CEO John O'Brien said the system needs to reduce expenses by about $50 million immediately to avoid ending the current fiscal year with a loss.
