UMass Lowell's Sammy Macy Named D2 Woman Athlete Of The Year
BOSTON (CBS) – Sammy Macy of Tewksbury had an amazing season at UMass Lowell, and the field hockey standout was awarded for it Monday.
Macy was named the Division II Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and honored with the prestigious Honda-Broderick Cup at the 35th Annual Collegiate Women Sports Awards at Columbia University in New York.
"Winning this award is definitely and amazing feeling," Macy said on Monday. "I never thought I would actually win it. Being nominated was amazing as it is, and then to win it is just unbelievable."
"There are so many phenomenal female athletes in Division II," she said. "To represent them is just unreal."

Macy led the River Hawks to a perfect 24-0 record and a National Championship in 2010. She finished her career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 91 goals and is second all-time with 38 assists. Her most important helper came during the National Championship game, feeding Liz Day for the game winner in their 1-0 triumph over Shippensburg.

Macy scored seven game-winners in UMass Lowell's undefeated season. She led the River Hawks in scoring three-straight seasons, despite having to come back from ACL tears in 2008 and 2009.
