UMass Lowell 'Top Off' Center, Open Time Capsule
LOWELL (AP) - UMass Lowell is set to "top off" the last steel beam of a new Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center and open a long-forgotten time capsule from 1947.
UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan, students and other officials are scheduled Wednesday to sign their names to the beam before it is put in place. The center, an 84,000-square-foot building, will be home to researchers and educators in
nanotechnology, plastics engineering and biomedicine.
Afterward, the school will open the forgotten time capsule discovered during demolition of Smith Hall, a residence hall razed last year to make way for the new center. The time capsule was assembled in 1947.
Students and university officials will offer items for a new time capsule.
