UMass' Charley Molnar: Minutemen 'Maturing And Getting Better' On Defense
BOSTON (CBS) - The UMass Minutemen return to Gillette Stadium on Saturday for homecoming weekend, as they look for their second win of the season when they take on Western Michigan.
UMass head coach Charley Molnar talked with 98.5 The Sports Hub's Marc Bertrand, and although his Minutemen lost to Buffalo last week, said there are plenty of great things coming from his defense.
"Our defense has been playing very, very hard over the last few weeks -- if not through the whole season -- and have gotten more aggressive and confident as the season has gone on," Molnar said of his defensive unit that did not allow a Buffalo touchdown until the fourth quarter last Saturday. "Another area where our team has gotten really strong is the fact our third-down conversions over the last two weeks, we've held opponents to just five of their last 25 third-down attempts. We're really playing some great red zone defense and third-down defense."

"Defensively we're maturing and getting better. We need to be a year bigger and better in the trenches; we're not quite there yet and not as physically mature as other teams in our league," he said.
