UMass Basketball Ranks 24th In AP Poll

BOSTON (CBS) - The UMass Minutemen are back in the Top 25 for the first time in nearly 15 years.

The 6-0 Minutemen, who won the Charleston Classic over the weekend with victories over Nebraska, then-19th ranked New Mexico and Clemson, are ranked 24th in this week's AP Top 25.

This is the first time UMass has been in the regular season Top 25 since 1998-99, three years after the school's only Final Four appearance under then-head coach John Calipari and star center Marcus Camby. Current UMass head coach Derek Kellogg was a guard on that team, which lost to the eventual-NCAA champions Kentucky in the Final Four.

UMass' weekend in Charleston ended with a hard-fought 62-56 win over Clemson on Sunday night -- the Tigers' their first loss of the season. The Minutemen got 20 points and 12 rebounds from Cady Lalanne, who was named MVP of the tournament, as standout guard Chaz Williams was held to just four points on 1-for-12 shooting by a stifling Clemson defense.

The 6-0 start is the best by the Minutemen since they opened the 2010-11 season a perfect 7-0. They get their chance to match that start Tuesday night when they face the 5-0 Eastern Michigan Eagles.
