UFC Returning To Boston In August, Dana White Announces
BOSTON (CBS) -- It's official: The UFC is returning to Boston.
UFC president Dana White announced via Twitter on Friday that UFC will hold an event at the TD Garden on Aug. 17.
"We are FINALLY going back to Boston at the TD Garden on Aug 17th for the launch of FOX Sports 1!! We are bringing a SICK card :)" White promised.
Boston hasn't seen a UFC event since August 2010, which was the first ever in Massachusetts. That night, Frankie Edgard defeated B.J. Penn to retain the light heavyweight championship, and Nate Diaz's guillotine choke on Marcus Davis earned him Fight of the Night honors. That night, Randy Couture also defeated James Toney, appearing in his first and only MMA fight after his boxing career.
Last October, White said he had been working on bringing the UFC back to Boston, guaranteeing it would get done in 2013.
The Boston event will be UFC's debut on the Fox Sports 1 Network, which also has agreements to air college basketball and football, NASCAR and soccer and will go on the air for the first time on Aug. 17.
