Man Shot By Tyngsboro Police In 'Grave Condition'
TYNGSBORO (CBS) -- A man shot by police after they said he dragged an officer with his car Saturday night remains hospitalized Sunday.
The 27-year-old Tyngsboro man was taken by medflight to a Boston-area hospital and is in 'grave condition,' according to the Middlesex District Attorney's office.
The incident started when officers tried to pull the man's car over around 8:30 p.m. He fled the scene and led officers on a chase that went down Route 3 and ended in the parking lot of Sully's Ice Cream on Gratiteville Road in Chelmsford.
When a Chelmsford police sergeant approached, the man backed up, dragging the sergeant for several yards, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's office.
Myka Reeder, who lives across the street, witnessed the incident.
"I heard sirens, so I looked out the window and there were a bunch of police cars surrounding this one car," she said. "An officer went to pull the guy out of the car, he floored it backwards, smashed the fence, dragged the officer with him."
That's when the Tyngsboro officer, fearing for the Chelmsford sergeant's safety, fired twice.
"I kind of went towards the window to look to see what was going on and then I heard two gun shots," said Sully's Ice Cream Stand employee Jen Janiak. ""It was really fast. It was such a shock."
The Chelmsford sergeant was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries and later released.
The Tyngsboro officer who shot the driver has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
