Two Charged In Shooting Outside RI Nonviolence Center
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Police are charging two men in a shooting that injured two people outside a Providence nonviolence center.
Maj. Thomas Oates of the Providence police said Monday that two suspects -- 49-year-old Mario Lopez and 21-year-old Jonathan Espinal -- have been charged in the shooting.
Oates says Espinal, who remains in police custody, fired the shots Friday that injured 21-year-old Ivan Soto and 18-year-old Freylin Ortiz. The two, who are expected to survive, were sitting in a car outside the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, which works with youths.
Oates says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has asked to take over custody of Lopez because he's in the country illegally.
No attorney is listed for Lopez. A lawyer for Espinal did not immediately respond to request for comment.
