After decades of serving up smiles, Twin Donuts diner in Boston's Allston neighborhood closed its doors for good on Sunday.

The family-owned diner has been a staple of the local community for generations. For Barry Andres, a regular at the diner, the closure marks the end of an era.

End of an era

"To see lovely faces, to see the wonderful couple and their family that owns the place and sit down and have a meal without feeling like you're going to have to skip a grocery bill to afford breakfast out once a week," said Andres.

The restaurant's affordable prices and warm atmosphere have made it a famous spot for locals for over 70 years. Local musician Evelyn, who lives just across the street from the diner, said she will deeply miss the restaurant. For years, Twin Donuts has been her Sunday routine, especially after late-night gigs.

"We're all musicians and we're often finding ourselves hungover on a Sunday morning after a show and the only thing I really want after a show is a double bacon, egg and cheese on a croissant from Twin Donuts and an iced coffee with too much sugar," said Evelyn.

Petition to save iconic sign

Though the restaurant is closing, some residents are hoping to preserve a part of the Twin Donuts legacy. A petition is gaining some traction to save the iconic sign, which has long been a landmark in Allston. The petition currently has about 40 signatures. Andres is one of many who want to see the sign preserved.

"I don't see why anyone would want to take down such a familiar and prominent landmark," said Andres.

"I think, if anything, they should at least put it somewhere, like in a museum," said Evelyn.
