Truck Driver Spotted Julianne McCrery At Chelmsford Rest Stop

BOSTON (CBS) – A truck driver from Leominster played a big part in solving the mystery of the boy found dead in Maine over the weekend.

"I was driving in and saw the truck parked here, glanced down at the license plate and it said Navy Mom," Stephen Scipione told WBZ-TV's Kathy Curran.

Scipione had been following the case of Camden Pierce Hughes closely. When he pulled his delivery truck into the rest area on 495 South in Chelmsford, he saw a blue pickup truck, locked eyes on the plate and immediately thought of the image of the little blond haired boy, now known to be Camden Hughes, who's body was dumped by the roadside in Maine.

 "As soon as I drove in, I noticed a blue Toyota with 'Navy' around the back plate. So, I pulled over and just checked it out to see what was in it and (saw) a lady laying down in the front seat. That's when I decided to call 911," said Scipione. "Just leaving the little boy in the woods like that it's not right, not right."

Scipione said the blue pickup truck caught his eye because it was parked in an area with other tractor trailers, rather than with passenger cars. Inside, it looked like Julianne McCrery, Camden's mother, was sleeping across the front seat of the truck.

"It was emotional, very emotional after I figured out what I did. I'm just happy there's closure that's all," Scipione said.

Steve drives a truck for Maine's Paper and Food Service about 10 hours a day. He's trained to be aware of his surroundings. He says as a parent he was so troubled by the case that he had an eye out for the truck he saw on TV.

"I have four kids and I just think it's terrible for what she did," he said. "I was looking for the blue truck and when I drove in she was parked where the trucks park so it just stood out."

It was Scipione's keen sense that led to a major turn in a heartbreaking case. The Texas mother who pulled into this lot for a rest is under arrest for killing her six-year-old son, an innocent boy. "The case hurt me a lot so I wanted to see if I could help."
