Mass. Troopers Equipped With Narcan To Combat Drug Overdoses
BOSTON (CBS) - For the first time, Narcan will be issued to a select group of state police troopers.
State police spokesman David Procopio said 95 troopers across the state will be equipped with Narcan.
"Narcan is being provided by the Department of Public Health and it's part of our overall strategy and mission to combat drug use and drug overdoses in the Commonwealth," Procopio said.
It's part of their pilot program.
Procopio says troopers across the state are seeing a disturbing uptick of drug use and they hope Narcan will save lives.
"One thing to remember is that a lot of troopers are on patrol in state parks, along state beaches, and state reservations, in areas where people may go for recreational purposes but also to use narcotics," said Procopio.
If the program is successful the department will look at expanding it.
