Transportation Expert: New Vision Needed To Repair Roads
BOSTON (CBS) – A transportation expert says Massachusetts needs a new vision when it comes to repairing aging roads.
Rosabeth Moss Kanter tackled the subject during a Thursday morning session with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
One message from the Harvard Business School of Business Administration professor was a little surprising.
"We're better off in the Greater Boston area, believe it or not, than other major cities," said said, adding that that's because Boston has a lot of public transportation.
She also told the chamber that this country needs to address its failing infrastructure and it's something we all were reminded of just a few months ago.
"We had a terrible winter because we're suffering from the same things that they are suffering from all over the country which is lack of maintenance," she said.
Moss Kanter says one way to meet the challenges of an aging infrastructure is to listen to new ideas from the private sector.
"We could do a lot more than we do," she said. "We have to make sure that we have the entrepreneurs, public officials and the business community…talking together."
She says too often government gets in the way of innovation in the transportation field. For example, she referenced how much grief Uber gets from elected officials across the country.
She encouraged everyone to push infrastructure forward as an agenda item for U.S. presidential candidates.
