Training For Parents Of Kids With Autism Shows Benefit
BOSTON (CBS) -- Research shows that children with autism can benefit from therapy, but what about their parents?
In a recent study, when parents were trained how to effectively communicate with their kids and pick up on cues, their children showed improved communication and a reduction in the severity of their autism symptoms. And the effects lasted more than six years.
The children were young, between 2 and 5 years of age, so it's not clear if the parental intervention would work with older kids, but experts say the results are encouraging and even modest improvements in communication can make a big difference for families.
