Tracking a Wintry Mix...

Another Spring-like day (when the sun shined) with highs in the low to mid 40s, Boston's high was 43 just before 12:30PM.  Keep in mind these are supposed to be the coldest days of the year with daytime highs in the mid 30s and overnight lows in the 20s...we won't experience anything like that until early next week!

Even though our temps will stay on the mild side, we still have a storm on the way that will deliver snow, sleet and freezing rain to some folks in New England tomorrow night into early Friday.  Timing seems to be everything and this storm will arrive after sunset tomorrow evening, the coldest part of the day thus most towns west and north of Boston will start out with rain, snow and sleet.  Despite the nighttime arrival, the lack of a cold high to the north means that SE winds along the coast will penetrate and spread milder marine air in off the ocean changing the wintry mix to plain rain in all areas by the Friday morning commute.  There may be some lingering slick spots in Northern Worcester County and Southern NH and VT but most will just see wet roads for the Friday morning commute.  Now this system should be pretty loaded with moisture and there may even be some convective elements very early Friday morning this should push rain totals close to an inch...another solid soaking.

The weekend looks rather benign...a trough will be approaching from the west this will induce SW flow and the air will have a tough time cooling because of it...thus 40s on Saturday and near 40 on Sunday.  By late in the day a more potent front driven by the upper level trough will work in.  Flurries will announce it's arrival and temps will plummet into the teens and 20s for early next week.  However, as has been the case almost all Winter, the cold looks to retreat for the middle of next week.
