Toucher & Rich With Dan Roche: 'I Was Amazed At How It All Unfolded'
The Red Sox fell to the Orioles last night in Baltimore 4-3. Attention then turned to Tampa to see if there would be a one game playoff between the Sox and Tampa, but the Rays would need to lose.
Unfortunately the Tampa Bay Rays rallied to come back from a 0-7 deficit to beat the Yankees 8-7 on Evan Longoria's 12th-inning homer ending Boston's playoff dreams.
WBZ-TV's Dan Roche spoke with Toucher & Rich about the Sox missing the postseason, what's next for this franchise, what moves can they make and does Jonathan Papelbon return?
The Red Sox started September with a 9 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays, but could not hold on. No team has ever blown a bigger lead in September and missed the playoffs. The Sox did not win consecutive games at any point during a month where they went 7-20. How does Roche feel about the epic collapse of the Sox?
"We've seen historic collapses. We've seen the whole Bill Buckner, we've seen everything when it comes to watching this Red Sox team and to see something like that is a brand new one. It's one people around here won't forget for a long, long time I was amazed at how it all unfolded," Roche said.
So what will the future hold for this Sox team? Will there be any major changes made in the offseason?
"I think it depends on when John Henry sits down and thinks about this he goes over it with Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino and brings in Theo and they all sit around and discuss where the franchise goes from here...Now they're sitting here trying to decide what direction do we go with this franchise. Do we have to shake it up and that means in the form of a Theo Epstein or a form of a Terry Francona, who unfortunately could be the scapegoat in this whole thing," Roche said.
The Sox have a lot of players locked up with contracts what if any options do the have to move pieces around. Also do they bring back Jonathan Papelbon?
All this and so much more with Dan Roche.
