Toucher & Rich: Thomas' Comments & The Trade Deadline

First Bruins goalie Tim Thomas brought attention upon himself for not going with the team to visit the White House due to his displeasure with the U.S. government.

He did it again recently when he made a post on his Facebook page in support of Catholics saying "I Stand with the Catholics in the fight for Religious Freedom." This was followed by a quote from Martin Niemoller.

When he was approached by members of the media asking if he could explain what he meant the goaltender refused and left after several members continued to ask for an explanation.

Joe Haggerty was in the locker room and he spoke with Toucher & Rich about the goalie's comments, will this affect the team and will the Bruins make some moves before the trade deadline?

Is this whole Thomas thing bothering the Bruins and are we blowing this thing way out of proportion?

"I think it's definitely been blown out of proportion. I mean when you have T.V. news reporters showing up that have never been there before starting to ask questions and things like that, that's when you know it's kind of turning into a little bit of a gong show as far as the coverage goes."

"As far as the team goes I still don't think it has an impact. The problem I think is perception wise you can look at it from the outside and start to say to yourself look they're two and four since he skipped the trip to the White House, they haven't played well, they've been outscored like 20 to 12, maybe it is causing a distraction."

What if he just elaborated on what he meant and answered the questions by the media, is the media satisfied at that point?

"I think so or if even he states clearly on Facebook what the heck he's talking about I think it ends the questions, but he was so vague on what he was writing about on Facebook and he's so evasive when you ask him questions about it that I think it prolongs the story."

The moved on from the Thomas story and discussed what's going on with the Bruins.

B's General Manager Peter Chiarelli told Toucher & Rich earlier in the week that they would be in the market for a defenseman. Does Haggerty see them moving some pieces around before the trade deadline?

"I think they're going to look at one winger and one defenseman and I think those are the two spots that they really pinpointed that they need to fill, should fill and could fill with decent players."

Center David Krejci hasn't really been producing as much as the club would like. They even moved him down to the third line in an attempt to motivate him, but are still not getting much out of him. What is the next step to wake him up?

"I'm not sure there is much you can do. I had reservations about them signing David Krejci to that contract because I felt like you can't give players five million plus a year and have that kind of guy as one of your major cap hits if you're not sure how he's going to play from night to night."
