Toucher & Rich: Red Sox Haven't Played Like Themselves Since August
The Red Sox were only able to take 1 game in a 4 game series with the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend at Fenway. The Sox now only hold a 3 game lead over the Rays for the wild card.
Toucher & Rich were joined by Peter Abraham and the guys discussed the wild card, the offseason if they miss the playoffs, Terry Francona and conditioning.
With 10 games left in the regular season is Abraham satisfied mathematically that the Sox will not blow this 2 game lead for the wild card?
"I think a lot of those formulas are based on the idea that the Red Sox are going to start playing like the Red Sox and that hasn't happened since August. So I don't know how confident anybody can be given how they played this month and they've lost 9 of their last 11 games," said Abraham.
What if this Sox team missed the playoffs, what could happen during the offseason?
"I think if they don't make the postseason the question is going to be whether they need to make some sort of significant change whether it's the manager, the general manager, whatever it may be. If you're John Henery and you've increased the payroll and sunk all this money into free agents the last couple years and they haven't won a playoff game now going on a few years. You have to expect at some point he's going to call everyone in the room and go what the hell is going on here," Abraham said.
They went on to discuss Carl Crawford and John Lackey not really living up to what everyone expected.
They also discussed this late season slip by the Sox. How much of this is on Terry Francona?
The guys also talked about these Tampa Bay Rays. How have they been able to make such a push when they got rid of some big pieces in the offseason?
