Toucher & Rich: McAdam Live From Ft. Myers
Spring training hasn't officially started yet, but some Red Sox players are already present.
Sean McAdam is already down in Ft. Myers and he spoke with 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich about players showing up early, lack of Sox spending in the offseason, players that could fill some holes and Josh Beckett.
Jon Lester showed up early in Florida and Josh Beckett is there throwing sessions. Other than that there is not much going on since they don't officially report until Monday, so things are fairly quiet.
"I think it'll be interesting to see how guys tackle the subject of last year and that will be evident in the next four or five days as everyone starts trickling in and people are asked questions."
Jon Heyman has been catching heat for his feelings that the Red Sox did not due enough in the offseason to secure a starting short stop, get their compensation for Theo Epstein and sure up their starting pitching.
He brought up the fact that Sox ownership is spending lots of money on player rights for Liverpool and that they are more concerned about the soccer team. Folks have called Heyman out saying look at Boston's payroll, what does McAdam think?
"I think if you're going to have a payroll that's over the luxury tax threshold, which they're going to be that will be $178 million bucks, it's hard to say that the game's second highest payroll is the reflection of some cheap attitude here, but that said they didn't spend a lot of money this winter."
The guys discussed some starting pitching options for the Red Sox, is it just that Roy Oswalt doesn't want to play in Boston?
"I think that's a big part of it."
It seems like the St. Louis Cardinals want to get rid of starting pitcher Jake Westbrook, if you're the Sox do you take a flyer on Westbrook? Would the have to give up much for him?
"I think they'd have an interest in anybody of that caliber, the problem is that that's going to require giving up some prospects and I don't know that they view Westbrook as the kind of guy that they further want to deplete the inventory of prospects for."
Plus how does Josh Beckett look physically? Has he lost any weight?
