Toucher & Rich: If The Patriots Don't Trade For Revis He's Gone
BOSTON (CBS) - Free agent cornerback Aqib Talib agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos late Tuesday night on a 6-year, $57 million deal with $26 million guaranteed.
Now the Patriots are down to Alfonzo Dennard (serving a prison sentence), Logan Ryan and Kyle Arrington - not exactly the types of corners that strike fear in opposing offenses.
With Alterraun Verner, Brent Grimes, Vontae Davis and Talib all signed, the top-tier free agents for that position have dried up.
But supposedly there's still hope for Darrelle Revis.
Knowing how the Patriots operate, Fred, Rich and Jon Wallach all feel like if they can't make a trade for the Buccaneers' shutdown corner then they have no shot at acquiring him.
"Some people are saying you trade for Revis today because his contract is not guaranteed. There's a clause in his contract you can convert his money to bonus money, so you can do that and weaken the cap hit to $2 million a year. You can trade for Darrelle Revis and fit him under the cap," said Fred Toucher Wednesday morning.
"They're going to have to. Otherwise you're going to get out-priced," said Wallach.
"Well then get in line for Revis because there's two free agent corners left. There's Antonio Cromartie and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie -- both massive dropoffs from Talib. There's only these corners on the market and you have all these teams with a TON of cap money left," said Fred.
"You have to trade for him or else he's going somewhere else," said Wallach.
Rich referenced their interview with Jason La Canfora last week, the one where he said Revis could be had for a third rounder from Tampa Bay.
La Canfora doubled down on his take last night after the Talib signing. He believes Talib's deal with Denver makes it easier for New England to get Revis even cheaper, tweeting, it "Will only take a 5th round pick."
"I bet you the Patriots think twice if it's any more than that. And if it is any more than that, he'll hit the open market and he's gone," Wallach concluded.
