Toucher & Rich: Fred Accidentally Calls Jerry Rice Ray Rice

BOSTON (CBS) - NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice called in to 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich show Tuesday morning.

With the league placing a huge emphasis on illegal contact and defensive holding penalties for the season, Fred wonders if Rice would've liked the rules that way when he was playing.

"No. To be honest with you I prefer the contact," said Rice. "I wanted it to be physical during the ballgame. That gave me an advantage because I knew exactly where the defensive back was at and I could feel him downfield, come out of my route and go catch the football."

Rice is the league's all-time leading receiver, so suffice it to say he never really had any problems getting open. However, there were two cornerbacks that really gave him problems.

"I had two. Darrell Green and Deion Sanders. Darrell Green was just a pest. He was a little guy, but he was very feisty on the field. And Deion was a much bigger defensive back, but just as fast. So I had to work a little more to beat those guys off the line of scrimmage," said Rice.

His 49ers have been in the news as a report recently surfaced that head coach Jim Harbaugh has "lost the team." Rice touched on that, as well as defensive tackle Ray McDonald and his recent domestic assault incident. This led into a discussion about Ray Rice.

"I've seen the video and I don't want to see it anymore. I don't condone that type of behavior. I think as a man you should never put your hands on a woman," said Rice. "And that's all I got to say about that. I don't know [what will happen] with McDonald, but I totally agree with Steve Young. There's no way the 49ers should have played McDonald in that football game. If you put your hands on a woman I can't condone that. It was crazy to put him on that football field."

Ray Rice has been under fire for months, and even more so since yesterday when TMZ released the heinous elevator video of him knocking out his wife. And on the radio side it's all everybody has been talking about.

So with an errant slip of the tongue when saying goodbye to Jerry, Fred accidentally called him "Ray" which led to an awkward sign off.
