Toucher & Rich: Bruins Peaking Too Early?
BOSTON (CBS) - The Bruins are firing on all cylinders in this month of March after increasing their winning streak to eight-in-a-row following Saturday's game over Carolina.
The Atlantic Division is basically wrapped up as the B's have a 14-point lead over second place Montreal (including two games in hand), plus a three-point lead over Pittsburgh for the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.
The east is there for the taking, but after this weekend's game against the Hurricanes, some fans have brought to light a possible concern.
After the game, Milan Lucic joked that maybe the team is peaking too early with 15 games left to go in the regular season before the start of playoffs.
CSNNE's Joe Haggerty and Rich discussed the streaking Boston Bruins and whether or not they're peaking too early, and if there even is such a thing.
"The 'peaking too early' thing for me is more in the first few months of the season, when a team rails off a big streak and they're never the same again. I think we saw that the year after the Bruins won the cup. They were great in November and December and then just completely fell off the second half of the season," said Haggs.
Haggerty adds, "They fell apart and shortly after that Tim Thomas skips out on the White House. That's when things continued to spiral for them and it was clear they just didn't have enough in the tank. That was a case of peaking too early in the first half of the year."
The Bruins are fortunate to have put themselves in a position of power in this final home stretch of the season.
While a handful of teams in the East are fighting for their playoff lives, the B's can pretty much just coast until the postseason and rest key players as they see fit.
However, staying sharp and not getting complacent will definitely be a challenge this team is up for.
"Most of these guys have been through this. They're a veteran team. You look at all the holdovers from the Stanley Cup year, plus you add guys like Jarome Iginla and stuff who have been here and have done that. You've got to feel comfortable as a Bruins fan that they're not going to let [complacency] happen," said Rich.
