Bruins Feeling Fatigued? Boychuk Tells T&R, 'Everybody Feels Great'
BOSTON (CBS) - In the month of March the NHL was forced to condense its schedule due to the Winter Olympic break, so your Boston Bruins had 17 games jam packed into 31 days.
No sweat though, because in that span the B's went 15-1-1 -- including 12 in a row at one point.
During that stretch, rumbles started to creep onto the sports talk radio airwaves about the possibility of the team hitting its stride and "peaking too early," therefore tiring themselves in the process.
On 98.5 The Sports Hub's Gresh & Zolak show, rookie defenseman Torey Krug says he just rolls his eyes at this "peaking too early" talk, and it's clear that Johnny Boychuk feels the same way after his interview with Toucher & Rich on Friday.
The veteran defenseman said this morning that there's nothing to the team's back-to-back losses and fatigue is not a factor.
"Everything seems to be working fine," Boychuk said of his own health. "I just knock on wood and hopefully go in [the playoffs] healthy. I feel great, everybody feels great. You have to be in shape now playing that many games in one month, so if you're not in shape you're doing something wrong."
Boychuk credited head coach Claude Julien as a reason for the fresh legs.
"Our coach does a good job of giving us the rest. Even in practice he manages us pretty well. It's good for us to have days off. Not just short practices, but practices with good flow help too."
Shifting gears to last night's 4-3 overtime loss to Toronto, much of the blame is being placed on the rookie defensemen for some of their critical errors in crucial times. Torey Krug was called for holding against Tyler Bozak two minutes into the extra frame and the Leafs scored shortly after on the 4-3 man advantage to put the B's away.
It was a very questionable call to say the least, as it appeared Krug played it the proper way.
Although Boychuk didn't agree with the call, he says you can't complain because sometimes they just don't go your way.
