Krug: Bruins' 'In Your Face' Hockey Can Slow Down Detroit
BOSTON (CBS) - Much has been made about the Bruins' 0-3-1 record against the Red Wings this season and the fact that they haven't won a game in Joe Louis Arena since 2007.
For a no. 1 seed in the East and the best team (record-wise, anyways) in the NHL, the Bruins are faced with an unusually tough first round challenge in the skilled, speedy Red Wings.
Bruins rookie defenseman Torey Krug joined Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak for his weekly appearance on Wednesday to preview his team's first round matchup and what they have to do to advance to the next round.
First things first, in order to advance the team must first get healthy.
Several Bruins players missed Tuesday's practice battling the flu, and Torey Krug "knocked on wood" that he'd be good to go Friday night. When asked how many Bruins are sick, Krug declined to comment, saying, "You never wanna give any inside info. ... It's an important time of year."
Gresh and Zo joked that Krug would make a good Patriot, to which they all had a good laugh.
Despite the flu bug going around the locker room, the guys have been able to formulate a good scouting report on the Red Wings.
"They're a deep team. Their forwards, a lot of them are dangerous and can hurt you offensively. They play a good two-way game and are pretty solid. The goalie [Jimmy Howard] can steal a game or two. We're gonna do our best. We're gonna focus on ourselves and make sure we play our game and take away their time and space. Our defense will take care of the job," said Krug.
Despite growing up in a suburb 30 minutes outside of Detroit, the rookie blueliner told Gresh and Zo his family and friends haven't been bugging him for tickets.
"My family has done a great job of allowing me to focus and worry about what's going on in the locker room and my individual game and winning hockey games. I haven't talked to them too much about it. ... They'll do alright getting tickets. A lot of friends and family in the area have season tickets already, so hopefully they won't have to get too many."
Lastly, Gresh was curious to know what the Bruins plan on doing to slow down the speedy Red Wings, whether it be a special game plan or a simple adjustment.
"It's nothing we have to add to our game, it's about being a little more focused and taking away time and space from the other guys. We play an in-your-face type of hockey. We gotta make sure we do that this series, and if we do that we'll keep their scoring to a minimum and put ourselves in a position to be successful."
