Torey Krug Catches Dan Bylsma's Attention For U.S. Olympic Team
BOSTON (CBS) -- Rookie Bruins defenseman Torey Krug was not on Team USA's radar when head coach Dan Bylsma and general manager David Poile sent out invitations to camp over the summer, but a quarter of the way through the season, the folks at Team USA are starting to notice what the kid can do.
Krug, a 22-year-old Michigan native, has picked up right where he left off in the playoffs. He's scored six goals and added eight assists, putting him in a tie for the 13th in points by defensemen.
At 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, Krug is no doubt undersized, but he's nevertheless caught the attention of Bylsma, who admitted as much while in Boston on Monday.
"I can, without hesitation, say he has been mentioned and talked about a little bit, based on how he's played, the start he's had and what he's done so far through 23 games," Bylsma said, according to ESPN.com. "So, yeah, we've been watching. We've got a lot of people out watching hockey games live and on tape. We've certainly made note of how he's been playing and what he's done on the back end."
Krug remains a bit of a long shot to make the team, but the acknowledgment that he's garnered attention from those who matter is an exceptional pat on the back for a player who's still in the very early stages of his professional career.
