Keller @ Large: What A Waste Of Time

BOSTON (CBS) - They're back in a Manhattan courthouse today for yet another hearing on the completely ridiculous case of the NFL versus Tom Brady. And like the guy who leaves his gas guzzler idling for ten minutes before driving a block down the street to pick up milk, the whole spectacle makes you wonder about how eager some people can be to needlessly squander precious resources.

For starters, there's the complete waste of the court's time and the taxpayer dollars that fund it.

The federal district courts usually deal with major drug and organized crime cases, matters that threaten lives and the fabric of entire communities. Perhaps it's my priorities that are out of order, but I don't quite see the air pressure of footballs rising to that level of importance.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and his henchmen had credibility problems when it came to policing player behavior before this, but if they had any credibility left, they've squandered it now on this shoddy, dishonest prosecution. If, as I suspect, the judge throws their case in the trash where it belongs, good luck to Goodell and company trying to make their discipline stick in the future.

And all the alleged journalists and media organizations that have inexplicably chosen to make a crusade of trying to nail Brady, complete with sketchy leaks, inaccurate stories that go uncorrected, and flat out slander masquerading as "analysis" have squandered whatever credibility they had in the process.

Over what? An attempt to curry favor with the NFL brass or pander to the jealousy of Patriot-hating fans?

Thankfully, this whole sordid episode will be over soon. Unless it isn't.

After all, if you're addicted to foolish squandering, costly legal appeals will surely seem like more of a good thing.
