Yandeliz del Carmen Claudio wandered over to a small above-ground pool two doors down from her home on South Leydon Street.
She apparently climbed a three-foot ladder that leads to the water's edge.
Police don't know how long the toddler was in the water.
"I just don't understand how nobody realized a two-year-old was missing out of the house for those many hours, because when she first was spotted out there, it was around 6 (p.m.)," Tamiko Terry told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Monday.
The little girl wasn't breathing when she was pulled from the pool just around 8:40 p.m.
Terry's 15-year-old daughter Natalianna Andrade-Terry tried to perform CPR, but the toddler was unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.
"That's the worst thing that a parent can bear, losing your child," Tamiko said.
