Timeline: Search For Marathon Bombings Suspects
BOSTON (CBS/AP) - Here is a timeline of the events in the death and capture of the two Boston Marathon bombings suspects:
Thursday 5:10 p.m. - Investigators of the bombings release photographs and video of two suspects. They ask for the public's help in identifying the men.
10:20 p.m. - An MIT police officer was shot and killed in an ambush. It was originally reported that the officer had been responding to a report of disturbance in the area of Vassar and Main streets in Cambridge. However, law enforcement officials later said he was sitting in his car with his gun in his holster when he was "ambushed" by the two suspects.
Approximately 11:30 p.m. - An armed carjacking took place in the area of Third Street in Cambridge. The victim was held in the Mercedes SUV for approximately a half hour.
Friday, approximately 12 a.m. - The carjacking victim was released at a gas station on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. He was not injured. Police immediately began searching for the vehicle involved. According to WBZ-TV sources, the vehicle's tracking system was activated, and an MBTA Police officer began following the car.
Around 1 a.m. - Officers from several agencies were involved in a pursuit into Watertown. Gunshots and explosions were heard in the area of Dexter and Laurel streets in Watertown. Explosive devices were reportedly thrown from car by the suspects. The suspects and police also exchanged gunfire in the area of Dexter and Laurel streets. An MBTA police officer was shot and seriously injured during the pursuit. One of two Boston Marathon bombing suspects was injured and captured.
1 a.m. - Police agencies descended on Watertown. A manhunt was underway for the second suspect, who managed to escape on foot. A 20-block area was surrounded by police.
1:35 a.m. - The injured Boston Marathon Bombing suspect died at the hospital.
2 a.m. - The FBI released new photos of the suspect who remained on the run.
4:20 a.m. - — Massachusetts state and Boston police hold a short outdoor news briefing. They tell people living in that section of eastern Watertown to stay in their homes. They identify the carjackers as the same men suspected in the marathon bombings. Overnight, police also release a photograph of a man believed to be Suspect No. 2, apparently taken from store video earlier in the evening at a 7-Eleven convenience store in Cambridge. He is wearing a grey hoodie-style sweatshirt.
5:45 a.m. - All MBTA service was suspended indefinitely. Massachusetts State Police told residents in Watertown, Newton, Allston/Brighton, Waltham, Cambridge, and Belmont to stay home until further notice. No traffic was being allowed to leave Watertown.
Around 5:50 a.m. - Authorities urge residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge, Arlington and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay indoors. All mass transit is shut down.
6:38 a.m. - The Associated Press reported that the Boston Marathon bombings suspects are from a region in Russia near Chechnya, and have lived in the US at least one year.
6:45 a.m. - The Associated Press identified the surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass.
6:55 a.m. - CBS reports that the two Boston Marathon bombing suspects were brothers.
Around 8 a.m. - Boston's police commissioner says all of Boston must stay in their homes as the search for the surviving suspect in the marathon bombings continues.
Around 8:40 a.m. - A U.S. law enforcement official and the uncle of the suspects confirm that the name of the slain suspect is Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's older brother.
Around 10:20 a.m. - Connecticut State Police said a gray Honda CRV believed to be linked to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been recovered in Boston.
Around 10:35 a.m. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth said it closed its campus and ordered an evacuation after confirming that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is registered there and lives on campus. The school said it closed the campus "out of an abundance of caution" as the search continued.
Around 11:30 a.m. - Massachusetts State Police explained that the brothers suspected in the bombings were in the Honda CRV when they carjacked the Mercedes SUV. For a while, each drove one of the two vehicles, but then ditched the Honda and reunited in the Mercedes.
Around 12:35 p.m. - State Police in Watertown said officers were searching door-to-door but still have not found the bombing suspect.
Early afternoon - FBI locates pipe bombs and other explosives inside Cambridge apartment of bombing suspects, according to CBS News. Norfolk Street remained evacuated.
6:08 p.m. - Massachusetts State Police announce door-to-door search has not located suspect. Tactical units are being pulled out of neighborhoods. Increased police presence will remain in Watertown.
6:10 p.m. - Governor Deval Patrick announces that the stay indoors order is lifted, and MBTA is re-opening.
About 6:15 p.m. - State Police say they believe the bombing suspect remains in Massachusetts and urge residents to keep their eyes open.
7:00 p.m. - Police descend on boat in the backyard of a Watertown home. WBZ-TV's Jim Armstrong reports 15-20 seconds of gunfire. Officers later used flash bangs.
8:45 p.m. - The second marathon bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is taken into custody.
