Thornton On Seguin: 'He Slept In, It Happens'
The Boston Bruins were on a roll until they met up with the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night, falling 2-1. Young center Tyler Seguin missed the morning meeting that day, and was a healthy scratch for the game.
Bruins forward Shawn Thornton spoke with 98.5 The Sport Hub's Toucher & Rich about Seguin getting benched, saying it is not as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be.
"We've all been there," said Thornton. "When I was younger I missed a flight once. So we've all slept through things and made mistakes. He sat out out his game, he paid his due and now I'm sure he'll be back in tonight."
So what exactly are these meetings, and how long are players required to be at breakfast?
"It's different every time because we got in at like two or three in the morning into Winnipeg so we didn't have a skate. I think we had breakfast from 9am to 11:30am. It was available for two and a half hours and then we had a meeting at 11:30am, if I'm not mistaken. The meeting took about 10 to 12 minutes," Thornton said.
Guys noticed that Seguin wasn't at the meeting, so why didn't anyone think to go get the team's leading scorer?
"Nobody is down there from 9am to 11:30am; everybody assumed he would just show up at 11:30am, or he had already been down for breakfast or whatever," said Thornton. "He wasn't I guess, and then he wasn't there for the meeting. The meeting was pretty quick. I'm pretty sure he got down there right after the meeting."
Some people speculated that Seguin wasn't even at the hotel that night, and maybe was late because he of a late night on the town.
"Yeah that's what we do; back to back games we get in at 3am and we're like 'whoo, where can we rip it up till noon the next day with a game,'" joked Thornton.
"It's not an attitude thing, really. Don't over think it. He slept in. It happens," said Thornton.
They went on to discuss the Florida Panthers and the success they have been having and the fact that they are at the top of their division.
"I think they have some really good players over there. I think they roll them pretty good and I think they have a good back end, and their goaltender has been pretty hot," said Thornton.
