Thief Steals Donations For Taunton Veterans
TAUNTON (CBS) - It is about as brazen as they come: A mid-day robbery in the middle of a bank.
The branch itself wasn't robbed, but a thief did get away with a large container that was chained to the table at the Taunton Federal Credit Union.
It was there to collect donations for a local veterans group that was raising money to put markers at the graves of all 6,000 veterans who are buried in Taunton's cemeteries.
WBZ-TV's Jim Armstrong reports
According to Taunton Police Sargent Richard Carreiro, the thief, "Walked in there and had some kind of cutting implement. He cut the thing and took the jar out."
The jar held close to $900 in donations.
"It's just horrendous that he would do that," Carriero said. "I'm a veteran. I served for 10 years in the Air Force. The veterans in this city are doing this for our veterans that passed away, that died for our country. So that's just a horrendous thing that somebody would actually do this."
Luckily for investigators, right after the robber snagged the donations, the bank's security cameras got a nice look at him.
They're hoping before too long, this thief will have to answer for his crime.
