Thermo Fisher To Lay Off 109 Workers At NH Facility
NEWINGTON, NH (CBS) - As President Barack Obama lays out his job creation plans, more than 100 New Hampshire residents are realizing they'll be looking for new jobs.
Thermo Fisher will lay off 109 manufacturing workers at its Newington facility. Their jobs will be moved to North Carolina. The remaining workers will move from Newington to other offices.
Joe Mitchell just learned many of his regular customers are going to be out of a job. Mitchell's gas station is next door to Thermo Fisher. He's going to miss the business and the people.
WBZ-TV's Lauren Leamanczyk reports
"They spend a lot of money here," he said. "All during the day, buy a lot of donuts, sandwiches, candy bars, gasoline."
Thermo Fisher hopes the laid off workers will apply for jobs in North Carolina or at other New England facilities, but there are no guarantees. They will also not receive moving expenses.
The news that a longtime employer is will leave Newington came just before President Obama is set to give a major jobs address.
Town Selectman Cos Iocovozzi is a business owner himself. He wants to hear the president explain how he'll make America more business friendly so companies will expand rather than consolidate.
"My question is, why is the northeast losing these manufacturing jobs. Is it our power? Our rates? Our taxes?
Mitchell probably won't be watching. He doesn't think Washington will help him at all.
"Are you kidding me?," he asked. "I'm going to be bowling."
Between loss of his neighbor and a highway change that'll make it harder to get to his Gulf Station, he doubts business will ever be the same.
