The Week Ahead...

The utopian weekend weather is a memory as muggy air has returned and along with that comes showers and thunderstorms.  We already had a round of soakers move through and although I don't expect more tonight, they will be possible.

The high that gave us the beautiful weekend has slid off to the east at the same time a hybrid like storm system sits to the south...in the middle is a stationary front separating muggy air from tropical air.  This is also providing a conduit for tropical moisture to work up the Mid-Atlantic.  With NE winds locking in cooler maritime air ahead of the surface hybrid low and the low itself staying far enough offshore, most of the heavy rain will miss us over the next 24 hours.  We are mostly looking at rain-free, cloudy, foggy, and drizzly conditions until Wednesday when the low will be far enough away.  At that point, weak but present, multi-layered southerly flow will establish itself on the Eastern Seaboard and very warm and humid air will bubble up into New England.  This will mean a Bill Murray type Groundhog Day stretch from Wednesday through Friday where we see several of the same days in a row.  It will shake out like this...morning fog will burn off to hazy sunshine, temps will spike up through the 70s close to 80 and that heat will spawn a few pop-up showers and thunderstorms.  Closer to the coast will be the last to see sun on these days and therefore will be the least likely place for a t-storm.  In all, most of this time will be spent rain-free.

An early look at Memorial Day Weekend shows a very warm Saturday with highs in the 80s but later in the day a very strong and active coldfront will be sliding through New England from NW to SE...there are some strong signals for some of these storms to be dangerous with wind and hail...time will tell.  Following the frontal passage, a much drier and more comfortable airmass should take over Sunday only to be replaced with more building heat for Monday.  In the end, we are looking pretty good for the three-day weekend right now!
