The Golf Club: July 5, 2014

BOSTON (CBS) -  On the latest edition of The Golf Club, Hardy sat down with some folks from the Massachusetts Golf Association, the creator of a new revolutionary golf ball, the head pro at Kernwood Country Club and much more.

But first up was Tony Day of Dennis Highlands on Cape Cod.

Dennis Highlands sits adjacent to Dennis Pines, its sister course located a stone's throw away.

Day was quick to note the fast greens that play at the Highlands, and although the course is not heavily tree-lined it does present a certain level of difficulty -- especially when factoring in the wind that's common on Cape Cod.

"The name of the golf course is Dennis Highlands. We sit on one of the highest points in the town of Dennis, so the wind on certain days can blow through here pretty good. It's a good contrast to our other golf course Dennis Pines."

Dennis Pines has been around for 20 years longer than Dennis Highlands, so anybody that's played can speak to the difference of the two in terms of tree size.

The specific hole that sticks out in most people's minds is no. 6, which Day joked, "It's almost as if the architect took everything he could muster and shoved it all into one hole. It's a beast."

Next up was Glen Sutton, creator of a new revolutionary golf ball.

Hardy was curious to know and asked Sutton right off the bat: what are you thinking?

I mean, the golf ball industry is pretty competitive. You've got Titleist, Callaway, Taylor Made, Nike, Bridgestone -- the list goes on and on. So what made Sutton throw his hat in the ring?

"It's a large market. There's opportunity to get some kind of share from the big guys. We saw an opportunity in golf balls. If you think about the craft beer guys I'm sure their families were saying the same thing to them going up against the Anheuser-Busch's of the world," said Sutton.

The name of the ball, you ask?

I Need The Ball.

Hardy also got the chance to talk with Frank Dully of Kernwood Country Club in Salem.

Back in the WBCN days, this crazy mailman named Steve would always call Hardy up saying, "Hardy! Hardy! We need to play golf I can get us on at Kernwood!" Well long story short Steve wasn't BS'ing and he did know the head professional at Kernwood -- Frank Dully.

Kernwood was Hardy's first exposure to golf on the North Shore of Massachusetts and he's since grown very fond of the course.

Lastly, Hardy spoke with a gentlemen from the Massachusetts Golf Association.

The Massachusetts Amateur tournament is coming up soon, so to get a bead on the event Hardy spoke with MGA executive director Jesse Menachem.

The tournament is entering year no. 106 and it showcases all the best golfers in the Commonwealth. After 10 qualifying events held at various locations throughout the state, a field of 132 golfers has been determined and play will start Monday, July 14th. A winner will be crowned at the end of the four days.
