The Adam Jones Show: Revis Was Just As Important As Brady & Gronkowski
BOSTON (CBS) - 98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones discussed with Rich Keefe his thoughts on Darrelle Revis bolting to the Jets and why the Patriots should have made a stronger effort to keep him in New England.
Late Tuesday night, Revis signed a five-year deal with the New York Jets worth $70 million dollars ($39 million fully guaranteed). Jones thinks he's worth every penny, and is having trouble understanding why the Patriots ended up letting Revis go.
"I don't understand how the Patriots could let Darrelle Revis go -- never mind that he went to the Jets. It was a reasonable price to sign him back for. He's less than Richard Sherman, he's not as good as Sherman. However, Darrelle Revis is right there with Sherman, so $39 million guaranteed is right there with Sherman's $42 million. It's certainly less than what I forecasted," Jones said. "The Patriots let him go, and that to me is indefensible."
Fans are rightfully outraged at Revis playing for a division rival in 2015. But Bill Belichick always has a Plan B, and often times Plans C-E, even if the prospects at the moment appear bleak.
"I know Belichick has a backup plan. I'm not saying that the Patriots will drop off a cliff. I feel like we need to reiterate this because people here rip on the team. The Pats will win the division. They will not be worse than the Jets. They will probably be back in the AFC Championship game. However, it doesn't mean I can't hate this move," Jones added.
For Jones, the Revis factor is the biggest difference from being a Super Bowl contender to being a Super Bowl favorite.
"They're not a Super Bowl favorite, which they would've been with Revis. That's not a bad spot to be in. $39 million guaranteed when the market is $48 million for Patrick Peterson, $42 million for Richard Sherman, and [the Patriots] can't go to $39 million?"
Along with Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, Darrelle Revis was a vital piece to Lombardi No. 4 for New England, which is why Rich Keefe is so peeved at the news.
"Revis was the missing piece toward winning a Super Bowl," said Keefe. "We've said time after time as long as Brady, Gronkowski, and Revis are healthy, this team can win a Super Bowl. Now you lose one of those players not due to injury, but because you don't want to pay him too much. Now you're right back to where you were the last 10 years. Revis is just as important as Brady and Gronk and he's gone because of money."
