Thanksgiving Weekend Forecast: Chilly With Sunshine
BOSTON (CBS) - The worst is over.
If you plan on traveling for the holiday and haven't left yet, there is good news regarding the weather.
Check: Current Conditions | Weather Map Center | Interactive Radar | Traffic
Most of southern New England received 1-3" of heavy rainfall early on Wednesday and farther north in central and northern New England anywhere from 4"-12"+ of snowfall!
Great for ski areas, but bad timing for anyone traveling in New England early on Wednesday.
The steady rain and snow have passed and now are tapering to just some rain/snow showers for the remainder of Wednesday and there is nothing but sunshine to follow.
Wednesday Afternoon-Evening:
The last of the showers will taper around dinnertime (5-6pm) and the clouds will begin to break a few hours later (8-10pm).
This will lead to a rapid drop in temperatures, nearly every city and town will dip below freezing around midnight or shortly after.
This will lead to some black ice on any untreated surfaces and roads so please be careful if you are out late or up early tomorrow.
Boston has about a 50-50 chance of actually going below freezing for the first time this season!
Thanksgiving:
After a very cold start in the 20s in most locations, under full sunshine we will warm into the 30s by the time most of the high school football games get underway.
A bit of a breeze will make it feel just a few degrees cooler at times.
The high for the day will be in the mid to upper 40s in the early to mid afternoon, right around the time most folks are carving up Tom Turkey.
If you are thinking about a late afternoon walk to burn some calories, you will certainly need to bundle up, temps will be falling back into the low 40s late in the day.
Black Friday:
Because of a light southwesterly wind, Thursday night and Friday morning should not be quite as cold as the prior night.
Lows on Friday morning will range from 28-38 and the sun will warm us up quickly again.
Temperatures will top 50 degrees by midday and peak out in the 55-60 range by mid afternoon with just a few clouds dotting the sky.
Saturday/Sunday:
We have had a near-perfect November when it comes to weekend weather thus far and this weekend will be no exception.
During our 6 weekend days so far this month we have had no precipitation and temperatures have averaged 3 degrees above normal.
This weekend is forecast to be much the same - no rain, plenty of sunshine and highs in the 50s.
Earlier in the week it looked like we may have a chance to be in the 60s, but it now appears a back door cold front will slide southward through New England during Saturday, keeping highs 55-60 on Saturday and in the 50s on Sunday with slightly cooler readings at the coastline.
Happy Thanksgiving!
