12-Year-Old Boy Pulled From Water In Marshfield
MARSHFIELD (CBS) — A 12-year-old was pulled from the water at Green Harbor Beach in Marshfield on Tuesday afternoon.
Police confirmed people nearby took him out of the water and started CPR.
"Some alert people here on the beach, civilians, noticed a 13-year-old boy floating face-down in the water," said Police Chief Phil Tavares. "They were able to bring him to shore. They weren't able to get a pulse. They started CPR."
He was then rushed to a nearby hospital then transferred to Boston Children's Hospital.
Retired State Police Superintendent Marian McGovern was among those who jumped into action to save the boy.
"It was really evident that he needed help right away. So there was a young girl doing CPR on him and when she got tired I took over," McGovern said.
McGovern said the rescue was a true team effort, and "everyone did their part."
Bob Deininger, who lives on the beach, told WBZ-TV his daughter-in-law was the first to spot trouble.
"She said, 'call 911. There's an emergency on the beach,'" he said. "There appeared to be a young man surrounded by eight or 10 people and they were performing CPR on him. There was a lot of anxiety and emotion involved and things like that so my wife called 911."
Chief Tavares said the civilians did all the heavy lifting.
"They made the observations, they brought him to shore, they immediately started CPR, they called 911," he said.
Witness Robin Deininger said the 12-year-old will for sure be "in her prayers."
The boy is a Marshfield native, and his condition remains "critical but stable," according to Tavares.
