Peabody High School Student Survives Car Crash Into House
PEABODY (CBS) - A Peabody High School student survived a horrific crash into a house early Sunday morning.
The accident happened around 2 a.m. on Herrick Road in Peabody.
The homeowners were out of town at the time, but neighbors said they awoke to a loud bang.
WBZ-TV's Alana Gomez reports
"The car was up against the house. The engine was in the middle of the front lawn. The car was on fire, it was scorching the house," said neighbor Charles Annino.
Car parts were strewn all over the lawn and the fire charred part of the front of the house.
Neighbors said firefighters arrived quickly and pulled the driver, 18-year-old Robert Habeeb, out.
"You could see the smoke coming off him," said Annino.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident and say Habeeb is not facing any charges.
His father told WBZ-TV he believes his son fell asleep at the wheel on his way home after spending time with friends.
Habeeb was only a quarter mile from his house.
His father said his family got the call and rushed to the scene, only to see his son taken away in an ambulance. They drove right behind it to Massachusetts General Hospital.
"All the way down there, 'God let him be OK,'" Robert Habeeb, Sr. said as he was praying on the way.
Habeeb says his son is unconscious, in a lot of pain and in the burn unit for smoke inhalation.
"He has a couple of burns on his hand and a cut on his ear and a big lump on his head, but other than that he's in good shape," said his father.
"I'm just glad the firefighters got there when they did before it was a tragedy."
