17-Year-Old Boy Drowns At Georgetown Pond

GEORGETOWN (CBS) -- A 17-year-old boy drowned at a Georgetown pond on Saturday afternoon.

First responders were called to Pentucket Pond at American Legion Park at 2:50 p.m. after receiving a report about a possible drowning.

Georgetown Police chief Donald Cudmore told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karyn Regal the boy was swimming with friends before he went under the water.

"We've been told this individual cried out and was having trouble," he said.

Tanisha was with the victim as they swam out to the rope barrier, where the depth was roughly six feet.

"I turned around and he was gone under the water," she told WBZ.

Police say a lifeguard was watching the busy beach and did respond, but by the time officers and firefighters arrived Hillary Scheffreen was already in search mode.

"I went running off the dock and dove in," she said.

She happens to be a certified lifeguard who was there for the day and joined several others looking for the missing teen.

The Beverly Dive Team entered the water at 3:36 p.m. and found the teen in about 15 feet of water five minutes later, according to a statement released late Saturday night.

The victim's friends are mourning his passing.

"I love him a lot and he's one of my close friends," said one friend.

The teen's identity has not been released by police until family has been notified. The incident remains under investigation by Georgetown police and State Police through the Essex County District Attorney's Office.
