Suspect Shot By Police In Dartmouth Charged With Domestic Assault
DARTMOUTH (CBS) -- A man shot by police after they say he charged at them with a knife Sunday has been charged, the Bristol County District Attorney's office said Monday.
Ryan Kuphal, 23, of Dartmouth, was charged with domestic assault and battery, use of a motor vehicle without authority, larceny over $250, unarmed robbery of a person over 60 years old, and unarmed carjacking. The Bristol County DA's office said the charges were preliminary, and that the investigation remains ongoing.
Dartmouth police were called to a home on Sunday on a report of a domestic violence incident between a mother and her son. While officers were responding, the DA's office says Kuphal fled in his mother's car.
When officers found Kuphal a short time later outside of a home, they say he charged at them with a knife. The officers used a stun gun, but said it didn't work, and Kuphal continued to charge. They say one of the officers then fired a shot, hitting him.
He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was improving Monday after initially being listed in serious but stable condition.
The Bristol County DA's office said that, since Kuphal is currently in Rhode Island, he must first be arraigned as a fugitive from justice there and waive rendition. He will then be transported back to Massachusetts at a date to be determined, where he will be arraigned in New Bedford District Court.
