Suspect Crashes After Police Chase In Burlington

BURLINGTON (CBS) - Burlington police said a suspect led them on a chase, rammed a police car, tried to hit an officer and hit two vehicles before he was arrested on Monday. They said it appears the suspect is part of a credit card fraud ring.

Monday night at around 7:00 p.m. police said an officer noticed a minivan idling outside the Burlington Mall. The officer ran the plate and discovered it belonged to another vehicle. When he approached the minivan the driver got in and took off.

Police said the driver reached speeds of 80 mph as he drove through Burlington toward the town square. Officers said by the square, the suspect rammed into a police car and then tried to hit an officer who fired two shots.

Police said the suspect stopped on 3A when he collided head-on with a car being driven by a woman with two children. The woman was taken to the hospital; the children are OK, according to police.

The suspect ran into the woods, but officers said they were able to bring him out ten minutes later.

The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Robert Haught Jr. of College Park Maryland. Police said they found credit cards and high-end merchandise in the van he was driving.
