State police spokesman David Procopio says troopers went down to the water to get 23-year-old Daniel Jacques of Quincy out of the water just after 9 a.m.

"(Jacques) initially began to come in, but when he reached shallow enough water to be able to walk, he began to walk away from the troopers. The troopers told him to stop and he began running," Procopio said.
"The young man ran along the beach, and then ran across Hull Shore Drive in attempt to evade the troopers. He nearly caused several motor vehicle crashes as cars had to take evasive action to avoid hitting him. He then ran up the driveway of the Clarion Hotel."
