Supt. William Evans Named Interim Boston Police Commissioner
BOSTON (CBS) - Boston Police Supt. William Evans has been appointed as interim police commissioner with Ed Davis stepping down.
Mayor Menino appointed Evans to the position until the next mayor can appoint a permanent Police Commissioner.
"The Boston Police Department will be in great hands under the leadership of Bill Evans," Mayor Menino said in a news release. "He knows how to manage his team of talented officers, has the respect of the rank and file and has proven his ability to diffuse even the most difficult of public safety situations."
Commissioner Evans is a 31-year veteran who has overseen a number of police operations for large scale events in the city, including parades, sporting events and the response that followed the Boston Marathon bombings.
"I am honored and humbled that Mayor Menino has entrusted me to lead the Boston Police Department," Evans said in a statement. "I have spent my entire career with the Boston Police Department and have a deep respect for all its members. I strongly believe in partnerships and am committed to community policing. The Department has made great strides in reducing crime and forging relationships with the community. I remain committed to that agenda and will work hard to maintain the community's trust."
