Students Protesting Future Closure Of Lawrence School
LAWRENCE (CBS) - Despite the joy over Pope John Paul II's beatification ceremony, there were silent protests on Sunday over the closing of a catholic school.
A number of students from the Saint Mary of the Assumption School in Lawrence were in the cathedral to support their school.
Earlier this month, the pastor of St. Mary's parish announced the school would close for good in June.
Pastor Jorge Reyes said the school doesn't have the financial resources to erase its $300,000 debt.
The school was founded in 1859.
